As the crisp air of autumn settles in, it’s time for UK gardeners to prepare for the colder months ahead. Autumn is an ideal time for essential gardening tasks that set the stage for a thriving garden come spring. Here's a concise guide to key tasks for home gardeners during this season.

  1. Tidy Up Borders and Beds Clear away faded summer plants and annuals, and cut back perennials to promote healthy growth. Remove weeds and debris to prevent diseases and pests from overwintering. Add mulch to insulate the soil and protect plant roots from the cold.

  2. Plant Spring Bulbs Autumn is perfect for planting spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and crocuses. Ensure they’re planted in well-drained soil at the right depth to give them the best chance to bloom when spring arrives.

  3. Lawn Care Rake fallen leaves to prevent lawn damage. Mow the grass a final time, leaving it slightly longer to protect it during winter. Aerate the soil to improve drainage and consider applying autumn lawn feed to strengthen roots.

  4. Prune and Protect Prune trees and shrubs, focusing on damaged or dead branches. Cut back climbing roses and fruit trees to shape them and encourage better growth. Protect tender plants by covering them with fleece or moving them to sheltered spots.

  5. Harvest and Store Harvest the last of your fruits and vegetables, such as apples, squashes, and root crops. Store them in a cool, dry place. Clear any remaining vegetables and turn over the soil to improve its structure.

  6. Compost and Soil Prep Autumn leaves are ideal for composting. Create leaf mould or add them to your compost heap. Add organic matter to your beds to enrich the soil in preparation for spring planting.

  7. Plan for Next Year Use the quieter time to plan next year’s garden. Take notes on what worked well and what didn’t, and think about any new plants or design changes you’d like to make.

With these autumn tasks, you’ll ensure your garden is ready to survive the winter and flourish in the spring. Happy gardening!
